Intestinal dysbiosis: With bacteria against bacteria - natural regulation of the intestinal flora
Naturopathy has always agreed that health “sits” primarily in the intestines. But it is only with the visualization and research of the smallest organisms that colonize the human body that the important role that different strains of bacteria play becomes clear. Countless bacteria in the intestine fulfill important tasks for health. Microorganisms as microorganisms have populated the earth in unimaginable diversity for billions of years. Bacteria can be found in all ecosystems, in the air, in water, in flora and fauna, where they perform complex, life-supporting tasks and on the other hand can also cause great damage. Our digestive tract is particularly densely populated, especially the small and large intestines. Here, up to 10 billion single-cell organisms perform important tasks, generate substances necessary for metabolism, participate in the formation of vitamins (including B vitamins, folic acid, vitamin K), create a natural barrier against invading germs and regulate as part of the immune system the immune process.
Good Bacteria - Bad Bacteria? Harmless bacteria, pathogenic intruders and microbes can occur in the digestive tract that only have a damaging effect when their environment (the milieu) changes. The majority of the population living there, which is useful or neutral, inhabit the intestine permanently. The same applies to the so-called opportunistic germs, which train the immune system and only damage the organism if there is an imbalance in the overall distribution of the bacterial populations. Important representatives of the permanent residents are Escherichia Coli, Bacteroides, Enterococcus, Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. They counteract putrefaction, ensure an acidic environment and supply the mucous membranes with food. Other types of bacteria such as Clostridia, Klebsiella and Enterobacter, but also Escherichia Coli, on the other hand, produce toxic metabolites and can cause illness if their populations overgrow. After all, there are bacteria that are natural pathogens when they enter the body from outside. These are warded off by the immune system, which includes an intact intestinal flora.
Therapy of the causes The "microbiological order" gets out of balance due to a lack of digestive juices, which in turn leads to a changed nutrient supply for the bacteria, which can have a beneficial or damaging effect on their populations. From the outside, nutritional errors, medication (e.g. antibiotics, cortisone), infections, chronic inflammation (IBD) as well as physical and psychological (dys) stress cause immune deficiencies and incorrect composition of the intestinal flora.
In addition to the administration of probiotics, comprehensive therapy takes these triggering factors into account by first initiating a change in diet (low in protein, high in fiber). Spices and medicinal herbs that contain bitter substances and essential oils allow digestive juices to flow, increase bowel movement and drive away harmful microorganisms. Measures to adequately deal with stress and to strengthen the immune system help to remain balanced so that the added bacteria can also settle permanently.
Intestinal bacteria, but which ones? There are a large number of medications on the pharmaceutical market that are made from bacteria (probiotics). The naturopath, who is a naturopathic practitioner, usually decides which bacterial strains are given in which quantity and sequence, whether living or killed populations are used, after the laboratory examination of a stool sample, in which the exact number of bacterial groups occurring is determined. Together with the measures mentioned above, many ailments such as skin diseases, allergies, food intolerances, susceptibility to infections or chronic inflammatory bowel diseases can be alleviated and cured.
